What Happened: The Core Story
Avinash Singh, a Product Manager with 7+ years of work experience and 12+ years of unblemished presence on LinkedIn, had his account locked after opening 15–20 coworker profiles in browser tabs via Cmd+Click on his first day at a new company.
At 15:01 CST, LinkedIn Safety Operations formally notified him that the suspension was temporary and promised it would be automatically lifted. At 15:08 CST, Avinash replied honestly explaining his manual tab browsing. At 15:33 CST (32 minutes after the initial promise), support abruptly flipped the decision to an irreversible lifetime ban.
Despite completing three separate government ID verifications (passport and driver's license), every appeal was dismissed with canned macros. In one email, support agent Ramesh S accidentally left internal decision cheat-sheet prompts intact ("**ONLY if second offense. Remove if..."). LinkedIn's India Grievance Officer subsequently confirmed that once banned, a member is barred for life from ever opening a new account. An appeal is currently pending before India's Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC Appeal No. 133672/2026).
Verified Quotes for Attribution
"When you join a new company as a Product Manager, reviewing your coworkers' profiles in tabs to understand reporting lines and cross-functional teams is standard onboarding practice. I used zero automation, passed three government ID verifications, and was completely honest with support. In return, I was permanently locked out of a 12-year professional identity in 32 minutes."
"We noticed that an unusually high number of member profiles were being viewed... so we temporarily suspended it. At the end of the temporary suspension, your account will be automatically unrestricted."
"In order to reinstate your account, we asked you to review and agree to comply with our User Agreement and Professional Community Policies **ONLY if second offense. Remove if the member didn't receive any warning and/or used more than 2 unique blocked PIDs. However... your account has now been permanently restricted."
"...if LinkedIn has determined that you are no longer eligible to use our services, that decision applies to both any existing account and any future accounts you may create. Creating a new account in an attempt to circumvent that decision is not permitted... you should not create any new LinkedIn accounts or attempt to access our services through another account."
